Hispanic Chamber Board votes to sign resolution in support of a
VIA Metropolitan Transit Modern Streetcar Project
On Thursday, May 22, 2014 the Board of Directors of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (SAHCC) voted to sign a resolution in support of the VIA Metropolitan Transit Modern Streetcar Project in downtown San Antonio.
In addition, the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce recommends that San Antonio’s minority, local, small and women-owned businesses are highly considered when contracts are set to bid for transportation projects. As a city that is over 60% minority, with local, ready, willing and able taxpayer contractors, the Hispanic Chamber recommends that the proposed construction money stay local, in order for awarded contracts to mirror the diversity of the San Antonio business community
“Capital investments in public transportation, including modern streetcar systems, generate business activity, create jobs, boost property values, increase tax revenues, and get more people to work,” said Ramiro Cavazos, Hispanic Chamber President & CEO.
The Hispanic Chamber believes the Modern Streetcar Project will:
connect employers to their work forces therefore stimulating economic development.
provide more transportation choices.
revitalize the central business district, encourage a pedestrian-friendly environment, and prepare for future growth while decreasing traffic downtown.
improve air quality and promote sustainability and livability throughout San Antonio.
will bring job growth associated with the streetcar project.
not increase tax needed to pay for the project construction.
