Congressman Lamar Smith (TX 21), Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, and Senator Chuck Grassley (IA), the Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, have introduced E-Verify bills for consideration in their respective Chambers. Congressman Smith’s H.R. 2164, the Legal Workforce Act, and Senator Grassley’s S. 1196, the Achieving Accountability Through Electronic Verification Act, are intended to mandate an improved E-Verify program nationwide. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce as well as the Essential Worker Immigration Coalition (EWIC), a coalition of businesses, trade associations, and other organizations that support reform of U.S. immigration policy, collaborated on, and are in support of Congressman Smith’s H.R. 2164. Although both pieces of legislation seek to enact changes that will have a profound effect on businesses in our community, the focus of this position statement is on Congressman Smith’s H.R. 2164.
