Hispanic Chamber embraces Governor’s recommendations to increase higher education money to South Texas
Today Governor Rick Perry announced his recommendation of making the Permanent University Fund (PUF) available to South Texas in his State of the State Speech. Historically, the PUF has made additional money accessible to the University of Texas and the Texas A&M Systems, both of which encompass a large majority of Texas’ public university students.
“The San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce fully supports the Governor’s proposal,” said Ramiro Cavazos, President & CEO of the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. “The investment of Permanent University Funds will create additional opportunity for students to receive a first-class education from public universities with Tier-one academic research objectives. South Texans will benefit greatly through this investment in human capital.”
Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa and Chairman Eugene Powell of the University of Texas System have been great champions advocating for the investment of the necessary funds for higher education in the State of Texas. Their effort and this investment will allow a new university to provide the foundation for an emerging research university and, ultimately, the first Tier-one University in South Texas. This will also increase the synergy of education, research, and economic development in San Antonio and the Rio Grande Valley.
In December 2012, the Executive Board of the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce approved to fully endorse The University of Texas System’s initiatives at the 83rd Texas Legislative Session in Austin during our ¡VIVA! San Antonio trip on Feb. 21 ; We will encourage the enactment of legislation allowing The UT System to create a new university with campuses across the Rio Grande Valley that include The University of Texas at Brownsville, and The University of Texas – Pan American.
