San Antonio. May 5, 2025. Ron Nirenberg, outgoing mayor of San Antonio and a distinguished alumnus of Trinity University, will join the faculty this fall as the Calgaard Distinguished Professor of Practice in the Department of Communication, the University announced today. His 12-month, renewable appointment begins August 1, 2025.

In this newly appointed role, Nirenberg will teach courses in communication during the 2025-26 academic year, contribute to Trinity’s intellectual community through a public lecture, and serve as an ambassador for the University.

“We are pleased to welcome Mayor Nirenberg back to Trinity,” said Trinity University President Vanessa B. Beasley, Ph.D. “As an alumnus who has dedicated his life to public service and leadership, Ron embodies the values of civic engagement and thoughtful communication that we instill in our students. His return to campus will enrich our academic mission and deepen our connection with the community.”

Nirenberg, a 1999 Trinity graduate with a degree in communication, has served as mayor of San Antonio since 2017, earning national recognition for his leadership on issues ranging from climate resilience to urban planning to subnational diplomacy. Under his tenure, San Antonio has become a leader in workforce development and housing policy, while maintaining a focus on sustainability and inclusivity as one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States.

“I’m honored to return to Trinity this coming year,” Nirenberg said. “My time as a student here shaped who I am as a leader, and I’m eager to give back to the institution that helped launch my career. I look forward to engaging with students and faculty as we explore the ways communication, public policy, and leadership intersect to shape our communities.”

The Calgaard Distinguished Professor of Practice is an endowed faculty position named in honor of former Trinity University President Ronald K. Calgaard, whose legacy of visionary leadership continues to inspire Trinity’s mission of academic excellence and civic responsibility.

“Ron Nirenberg’s appointment is a powerful reflection of Trinity’s commitment to integrating theory with real-world practice,” said Megan Mustain, Ph.D., provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. “Our students will benefit tremendously from his lived experience in public service and his insight into the complex communication challenges facing today’s leaders.”
